I enjoyed all the panning tricks and the layering that you did to add bulk to the sound but I came to this song expecting some dark electronic. Which may have made me enjoy this less. I'll have to come back to listen to it again later. What kind of machine? Like a furby or something. The crazed mind of a furby perhaps. Also just to be more critical, in my opinion, that bassline didn't shine enough. It obviously isn't the main point of this song but because it's on a completely different part of the sound i'm definitely sure you could have made it stuck out more. This is still me making reviews on my headphones though so I still have skewed perspectives.

The portamento stuff was neat.
I enjoyed the filtering on the drums.
I think the gating at around 2:40 was completely unnecessary though. Since you were reintroducing the beat back into the song filtered I feel that instead of giving me that big break out I would have liked to hear it ended up just keeping the same pace on my ears. So more of a flat and consistent ride instead of having exciting peaks.

Hm, maybe I named the track wrong? I couldn't really settle on a good name.

Lol, yes, the evil mind of a Kirby was definitely the inspiration for the track! ;-P

Honestly the bassline sounds pretty great on my headphones. I mean, it's not like, kick-you-in-the-face bass, but it seems pretty present. However I don't have a lot of equipment so I can't really get a feel for how it sounds on other people's stuff. I'll consider making it louder for the benefit of people using other headphones. (Listening again, it's quite low at times, which may be the problem you're running into.)

It kinda sucks that the 2:40 break didn't work for you though, maybe I should have quieted down the gated thing. I really liked that effect though. :X The track could do with a little more dynamic variation I agree.

Thanks for the good tips and review!

I felt like I was in an anime beach village with meadows and stuff. Like JRPG beginning of your adventure kind of stuff before everything goes bad.

johnfn responds:

Honestly, that is my favorite type of JRPG music. I would play an entire JRPG where nothing ever went bad and you could just listen to happy music all the time.

Thanks for dropping by :-)

With headphones the arpeggio got really tiring on my right ear. I think you should give it some interesting sweeping panning or just make it wide as fuck.

There are two going, one in each ear, and during the verses they cross sweep

I liked it a lot. If I had to nitpick though is that the frequencies seem a bit muddy to me (especially on the piano/guitar). I like the story you portrayed though.

johnfn responds:

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! (Also, glad to see you're still around!) The muddiness was like 30% intentional, because I feel like sounds that have more reverb and are more blurry feel more like memories to me. I can understand that towards the end there is a bit too much though, especially towards the higher frequencies...

Again thanks for dropping by!

It's fun that when I upload stuff you always have new things to listen too. Usually things of the same intent too. :3

I like the white noise btw. good frequency filler.

I'm not here to critique anything though. I just like listening. I enjoyed it ;d

johnfn responds:

Ha! It's actually some rain that I filtered. It's one of my favorite tricks because not only can it sound like a white noise sweep, but when you fully open the filter, you get some instant sad ambience.

Glad you liked it! You must be the first person not to complain about the crashes xD

That ableton has done wonders for your production. Nice to hear the diversity.

johnfn responds:

Ha! I wouldn't say it was just Ableton... I happened to switch to it at a time when I started to pay a lot more attention to mixing and production quality. Ableton does have a very clear interface - which may have helped me learn faster - but I'm 100% confident if I switched back to FL I could hit the exact same level of quality.

I liked it. Good run through.

johnfn responds:

Thanks bro! Glad to see you're still around.

I thought it was fun. Good work on doing other genres. So besides some obvious things you pointed out I found it kind of odd how you had rhythms on the bongos that sounds like stuff you play with your hands and then another rhythm where you play it with sticks. Totally feasible thing I just kind of expect different tones from bongos for that. I'm being a stickler IGNORE ME!

johnfn responds:

i know next to nothing about bongos so i think that your point is totally valid! thanks for the review.

First thing that immediately caught my attention was the filtering of the first harmony. Starting out as a fat muddy sound then having it become more refined after you introduce so hifreq sounds like hats but introducing low frequencies to keep it full. Was nice. The reverb on the snare is pretty wicked and I like the use of cello sweeps, sounds like a cello noise to me, that are panned away from the focus.

A definite 5/5 on atmosphere and creating depth.

I think if you had a longer phase sequence or some more interesting filtering on the gating effect later in the song it would sound a lot more dynamic.

Also for the ending I think if you let it draw out longer instead of immediately cutting off you could have a lot more of an eerie lingering feeling that feels more resolved since there was so much noise splashed everywhere. Probably just let the low resonating note just play itself out.

johnfn responds:

YES. FINALLY the 10/10.

this review is filled with a lot of great ideas. the thing about a longer phrase is good, i have this problem where i tend to get locked into an early idea and have trouble thinking of new ones afterwards.

also the ending is kinda funny because i accidentally forgot to lift the footpedal in one of the patterns and so you're hearing the leftover resonance from some older notes. i didn't realize this until i submitted to soundcloud and noticed that the waveform looked weird lol.

i'll be thinking about all this stuff when i write my next song. thanks for the review!

I came in to listen with just the intention to enjoy myself which I did. Fun little adventure.

I feel like I got a new powerful sword.

johnfn responds:

thanks for the review! chiptune sounds are the best sounds for going on an adventure! :)
